[Ruby said:] “I am more sympathetic to the American public.” I assume he had [made] reference to the psychiatrists labeling him as emotionally disturbed. He added, “Yes. I am more sympathetic, but they see I am not a martyr or a patriarch.”

Suddenly, he exclaimed, and this was the first time he voiced the sentiment, “I hope I didn’t hurt the Jews.”18

Silverman recorded in his notes that, in between the two bail hearings, on January 13, he met with Wade, which was when Wade told the rabbi that “I did not intend to be antisemitic when I used the name Rubenstein and not Ruby.”19 Silverman believed that Wade was sounding him out, since he would be cross-examining the clergyman at Ruby’s hearings and trial. Wade asked Silverman if he would testify that Ruby was insane. Silverman recalls, “I looked at him skeptically and non-committedly said, ‘In my role as clergyman, I shall testify to his character. I am not a psychiatrist.’”

Wade then told him that the prosecution would try not to inject the “Jewish issue” into the trial, but there was no getting around the facts that Ruby had attended services on Friday night and that Ruby had told people at the courthouse on Friday night that he was “an interpreter for the Jewish newspapers.” Wade maintained that, even though he had come to the phone when Ruby beckoned him, he “did not recognize him nor had he ever spoken to him before.”
